There's a free tool from Google that can put your business in front of thousands of local customers — and most local businesses have either never claimed it or set it up halfway and forgotten about it.

It's called your Google Business Profile (previously Google My Business), and it's the listing that appears when someone searches for your business name or looks for businesses like yours on Google Maps. It shows your hours, photos, reviews, phone number, website link, and more — and Google offers it completely free.

Why It Matters So Much

When someone searches "personal trainer near Panama City Beach" or "best seafood restaurant PCB," Google shows a map with three local business listings right at the top — before any regular website results. That box of three is called the map pack, and it gets the majority of clicks for local searches.

Getting your business into that map pack is one of the most valuable things you can do for local visibility. And the primary driver of whether you appear there is the completeness and activity level of your Google Business Profile.

The numbers

Businesses with complete Google Business Profiles are 70% more likely to attract location visits and 50% more likely to lead to a purchase. A well-optimized profile isn't optional — it's essential for local visibility.

The 6 Things Every Profile Needs

1. Claim and Verify Your Listing

If you haven't done this yet, start here. Google needs to confirm you actually own the business before your profile has full visibility. The verification process usually involves receiving a postcard or a phone call at your business address. Until you verify, your profile is limited.

2. Fill Out Every Field

Business name, category, address, phone number, hours, and website link. Incomplete profiles rank lower than complete ones — and they send a signal to potential customers that you may not be paying attention to your business online. Your primary category is especially important; it tells Google what type of business you are and determines which searches you appear for.

3. Add Real Photos

Businesses with photos get 42% more requests for directions and 35% more website clicks than businesses without them. Add at minimum: your logo, a cover photo, interior or exterior shots of your location, and photos of your work or products. Keep adding new photos over time — Google rewards active profiles.

4. Collect Reviews — and Respond to Them

Google reviews are one of the single biggest factors in both local rankings and whether potential customers choose you. The most effective way to get more: ask every happy customer in person right after the job, then send them a direct link to leave a review.

And respond to every review — positive and negative. Future customers read your responses just as carefully as they read the reviews themselves. A well-handled negative review can actually build trust.

5. Write a Real Business Description

You have up to 750 characters. Use them to clearly explain what you do, who you serve, and what makes you different. Write it like you're talking to a real person — not a list of keywords. Include your location and your main services naturally.

6. Keep It Updated

Update your hours for holidays. Add posts about specials or new services. Respond to questions that show up in the Q&A section. Google rewards businesses that actively maintain their profiles with better visibility.

The GBP + Website Combination

Your Google Business Profile and your website work together — not as substitutes for each other. Google uses your website to verify and strengthen your Business Profile. A business with both a complete GBP and a professional website consistently outranks competitors who only have one or the other.

Think of it this way: your GBP gets you into the map pack and gives customers a quick snapshot of your business. Your website gives Google more to work with and gives customers a complete, professional place to learn about you, see your work, and contact you. Together, they make your business nearly impossible to ignore locally.

Pro tip: create a direct review link

Google lets you create a short link that takes customers directly to the review box — no searching required. Go to your GBP dashboard, find "Share review form," and copy the link. Put it in your email signature, on receipts, and in follow-up texts. This one thing can triple the number of reviews you receive.
